Last Monday, February 16, the certificate was officially received certifying the registration of the newspaper Correo del Orinoco (1818-1822) in the “Memory of the World of Latin America and the Caribbean” register of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

According to information from the Ministry for Culture, this recognition reaffirms the historical sovereignty of Venezuela, highlights the validity of Bolivarian emancipatory thinking and praises the work of the National Library and Library Services Autonomous Institute as the guardian of the nation's documentary heritage.

The director of the National Library, Jorge Berrueta Simancas, explained that this distinction is the result of an exhaustive file prepared by a multidisciplinary team of researchers. Under the title “The Voice of the Liberator resonates in the Correo del Orinoco 1818-1822”, the team presented a rigorous selection from the collection of the newspaper founded by Simón Bolívar.

Berrueta emphasized that the arguments presented “were decisive” for UNESCO to incorporate this documentary body into the regional program. At the same time, he stressed that this achievement enhances collections with essential information for humanity, reaffirms the high level of training of the staff of the National Library and strengthens the mission of safeguarding, conserving and disseminating Venezuelan cultural heritage.

It should be noted that this is the second file from the National Library approved by UNESCO for inscription in the “Memory of the World”. The first to obtain this distinction was the “Collection of Photographs of Latin America and the Caribbean from the late 19th and early 20th centuries”.
