The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, rejected the executive order signed by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, authorizing Washington to impose additional tariffs on countries that supply oil to the island.
Díaz-Canel argued that the decision is aimed at limiting Cuba's access to fuel and compromising its economic functioning.
Díaz-Canel said that the measure is based on unfounded arguments and aims to put pressure on governments that maintain commercial relations in the energy sector with Havana. “Trump is trying to suffocate the Cuban economy through tariffs aimed at nations that trade oil with our country,” he said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, also responded to the United States government, noting that Washington is trying to completely curb Cuba's energy operations. He indicated that the Trump administration uses unfounded accusations to present the island as a security risk.
Rodríguez recalled that the policy of economic pressure against Cuba has been maintained for decades and warned that the new executive order aims to tighten that scheme. “The United States builds a narrative to justify actions that seek to restrict Cuba's access to fuel,” he said.
