Cimavax-EGF is currently the Cuban vaccine that helps fight advanced lung cancer in the United States (USA), increasing life expectancy for all patients with a serious diagnosis.
According to information reported by Telesur, the drug was produced in the midst of the US economic and financial blockade imposed on the island for more than three decades, but its development has been possible thanks to the efforts of men and women of science.
Cimavax-EGF was designed by the Center for Molecular Immunology and the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), where the Center for Molecular Immunology contributed the EGF molecule, while the CIGB provided the other components of the vaccine.
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a protein that circulates in our blood stream and helps normal cells to grow, but it also nourishes cancer cells.
When CimaVax is injected into the blood stream, it triggers a response in the immune system that produces antibodies that attach to the EGF protein and remove it from the bloodstream.
