The Presidential Commission for the Evaluation of
Housing and Infrastructure Habitability is making progress in the diagnosis of temples, churches,
historic centers and other heritage assets affected by the earthquakes of
last June 24, with the objective of defining actions for their recovery and preservation.
This was announced by the architects Vidal Cisneros and Fabiola
Velasco, members of the Cultural Heritage Network, who during an
interview with Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), emphasized that the inspections are mainly
concentrated in the states of La Guaira, Miranda, Aragua and
Caracas, where buildings are evaluated using a classification system by risk levels (red, yellow and green).
“The first actions are
about saving the lives of so many people who were affected by
these two strong earthquakes that we had, but, equally, we are waiting for
infrastructure and buildings with heritage value,” said Cisneros.
He also added that the
historic center of La Guaira constitutes one of the main points of
attention, along with churches and temples in Caracas and Aragua.
He indicated that the Cathedral of Caracas received a preliminary classification
of red risk due to structural damage, although he clarified that “the red card does
not imply total destruction, which indicates a greater risk”, so inspections
will continue to define the interventions required by each building.
For his part, Velasco explained that, after a first phase of diagnosis,
the structures will be subject to international evaluation and
restoration protocols, taking into account the characteristics of their
construction systems and the type of damage recorded.
“We are in a
first phase and then, with that first diagnosis, we will go to the specifics
of the damage that these structures have registered,” he said.
As for the University City of Caracas, the specialists pointed out that the commission responsible for its recovery activated inspections immediately after the earthquakes. Among the preliminary effects detected are structural fissures in the Covered Plaza and damage to some murals and works of art, on which evaluation and intervention work is already being carried out.
