“The evidence shows, irrefutably, that Guiana Essequiba belongs solely and exclusively to Venezuela and makes it clear that this territory has been part of ours since its inception with the captaincy general, in 1777,” said the president in charge of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez.

“This administrative unit (the Captaincy General of Venezuela) is the territorial origin of what was later the Republic of Venezuela, which was born with its declaration of independence and its constitution of 1811. From that time on, all the constitutions of Venezuela reflect the belonging of Guiana Essequiba to Venezuelan territory,” said the Head of State during the defense of our country before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the territorial dispute with Guyana.

In this regard, Rodríguez criticized Guyana's intention to bring this controversy to the court in The Hague, ignoring what both nations signed in the Geneva Agreement.

“The truth of the 1899 Award, and its misleading nature, highlights the intention of Guyana and those who impelled it to this reckless action to undermine the prestige of this court. How can they expect this court to tarnish their history with a ruling that revives, validates and legitimizes such colonial judicial fraud,” he emphasized.

In the same way, he stressed that the signing of the Geneva Agreement demonstrates that there are sufficient mechanisms to definitively resolve this territorial dispute, “all based on political dialogue and direct negotiation between the parties.”
