Venezuela will not recognize any judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or other international bodies on the Essequibo and will defend the Geneva Treaty as the only mechanism for resolving the dispute over this territory, said the Vice President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez.

“The issues of our country, based on the fraud that the award of 1899 meant, such as territory, its territorial integrity, sovereignty and peace, will never be handed over to third parties, neither court nor whatever one might call it. That is why we did not recognize the establishment of the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice to resolve this dispute over Guiana and Essequibo. We did not recognize it and we are not going to recognize what could come out of this rigged procedure, manipulated by transnationals,” he said during the swearing in of the new governor of our territory Esequibo, Neil Villamizar.

The vice-president reiterated that Venezuela never gave its consent to the process that is being maintained in the ICJ, at the request of Guyana, regarding our Essequibo. He also highlighted the bad faith with which the Irfaan Ali administration, supported by transnational corporations, has acted with regard to the mechanisms for resolving this controversy.

In this regard, Rodríguez denounced that Guyana's government authorities are being co-opted by transnational corporations to try to strip Venezuela of its historical right.

“The Geneva agreement is the only mechanism for resolving this territorial dispute and Venezuela will defend itself with all the tools that international law provides to assert its historical and legitimate rights,” he said
