This Monday, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) broke diplomatic relations with Rwanda for supporting M23 with troops and weapons; the political-military coalition Alliance Rio Congo (AFC-M23, in French) reported that they seized the city of Goma, strategic capital of the northeastern province of North Kivu.
In a statement, the M23 announced: “the liberation of the city was successfully completed” and “all soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) must immediately surrender their weapons within 48 hours and military equipment to the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) for storage.”
The group ordered the suspension of all activities until further notice and urged all residents of Goma to “remain calm,” Telesur said.
Previously, General Sylvain Ekenge, spokesman for the FARDC, said last Saturday that they will not let the M23 rebels enter Goma.
