Democratic legislators in the United States Congress demanded the impeachment of President Donald Trump following military attacks carried out on Venezuelan territory and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, together with First Lady Cilia Flores.
The opposition bloc reported that the operations were carried out without prior notice to the legislature, which generated tensions in foreign policy. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Speaker Hakeem Jeffries requested that members of Congress receive official information early next week.
Gregory Meeks, the highest-ranking representative in the Foreign Relations Committee, said he had knowledge of the facts only through the media. At the same time, Congresswoman Delia Ramírez presented a resolution to limit presidential powers in matters of war and argued that Trump must face an impeachment process.
Dan Goldman, also a Democrat, stressed that the action constitutes a constitutional violation susceptible to impeachment, as published by the Radio Miraflores website.
Criticism emerged from the Republican side. Brian Fitzpatrick said that the United States should not assume control of another country and that his Government should focus on domestic issues.
The attack on Venezuela adds to the escalation of military actions that Washington has carried out in the region, with victims in Caribbean and Pacific waters.
