Democrats overtake the Republican Party in US state elections

The Democratic Party prevailed in the local and regional elections held in the United States, obtaining favorable results in Virginia, New Jersey and New York, considered strategic for the political configuration of the North American country.

This Wednesday, President Donald Trump reacted to the election of Zohran Mamdani as Muslim mayor of New York, noting that “a victory was not expected last night” and that the results “were not good for the Republicans”.

Abigail Spanberger was elected governor of Virginia after overtaking Winsome Earle-Sears with more than 55% of the vote. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill won the majority against Republican Jack Ciattarelli and will take office in January 2026. In New York, Zohran Mamdani became the city's first Muslim mayor.
