The Government of Denmark sent military equipment and advance troops to Greenland to prepare for the arrival of more contingents of the Army and the rest of the Armed Forces, this in the face of the threat of the President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, to appropriate the island.
“Denmark will move towards a more permanent and large military presence in Greenland with the participation of other countries,” said Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, after a closed briefing by the Foreign Policy Committee of the Folketing (Parliament).
According to information cited by the public broadcaster DR, the troops sent include soldiers from Army units, who will reinforce the Danish military presence in Greenland, while a large part of the combat forces are fulfilling commitments in the Baltic.
The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, urged the US president to put an end to his “threats”, reminding him that “he has no right to annex one of the three countries of the Commonwealth of the Danish Kingdom”.
The senior official recalled that “the Kingdom of Denmark and, therefore, Greenland, is part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and are covered by the Alliance's security guarantee”.
