The deputy of the National Assembly (AN), Nicolás Maduro Guerra, stated that the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro by the US empire “has turned him into a symbol of resistance against fascism and imperialism,” and stressed that the country has managed to preserve constitutionality despite the aggression.
During his speech at the Meeting with the Network of Jurists, the parliamentarian recalled the first words spoken by the head of state at the January 5 hearing:
“I am not guilty, I am a decent man, I am the president of Venezuela and I am a prisoner of war. I was kidnapped from my house in Caracas”, a phrase he described as a message that “shook the world” and that today summarizes “a truth based on facts”.
Maduro Guerra stated that the United States military operation of January 3 represented “a deadly stab to international law, reiterating that, after these events, “international law is dying.” He stressed that the invasion, the kidnapping of the head of state and the forced transfer violated all the immunities recognized by universal norms.
The deputy stressed that, despite the aggression, the Venezuelan State remained standing.
“A great victory is that we maintained the constitutional thread and the strength of our rule of law and our institutions is evident,” he said. He recalled that the Supreme Court of Justice handed down the ruling on the night of January 3, in record time, to ensure institutional continuity.
Finally, he assured that the country will continue to defend its Constitution:
“The Magna Carta and the country's institutionality have been preserved,” he said, reiterating his commitment to building national unity and strengthening the rule of law.
