The Dominican Minister for Regional Integration Policies, Miguel Mejía, defended the Venezuelan electoral process and criticized opposition positions against democracy, according to Prensa Latina.

Speaking to Diario Libre, Mejía, also leader of the United Left Movement (MIU), stated that the people of the Dominican Republic always advocate a policy of peace, which they must promote in the world.

“The Dominican Republic must continue its role as a facilitator of peaceful and negotiated solutions in regional conflicts,” he said, adding that Venezuela has its rules and its Constitution “and based on them it must act. Any dissatisfaction must be managed within that framework and with full respect for the country's sovereignty.”

The Dominican minister stressed the importance of respecting the autonomy of peoples and the internal processes of each nation, arguing that any conflict or discrepancy that arises in Venezuela must be resolved within its own legal and institutional framework.

“No outside force, no matter how big or powerful it is considered or whatever it is, has the right to interfere in that,” he said and pointed out those who, in the name of sovereignty, commit the mistake of taking away the solemnity of that electoral scenario and fall into a position of interference.
