Diego Tizón, a seller of religious prints and items related to Holy Week in downtown Caracas, thanked the Urban Control Department of the Mayor's Office of Caracas for working hand in hand with sectors of the Popular Street Economy on a plan to reorganize and beautify public spaces implemented in 2024.
This spokesperson for the Popular Economy on the Street was one of more than 100 beneficiaries of temporary permits for the sale of religious items or products in the Catedral and Santa Teresa parishes of the Bolivarian Libertador Municipality of Caracas, where thousands of faithful Catholics professed their faith in their respective temples.
It should be noted that for the application for this temporary permit, only a copy of the ID, the Tax Information Register (RIF) and the duty tax for street sales were necessary.
Emilia Ochoa, a street merchant, recognized the importance of the humanization and awareness-raising process of representatives of the Popular Economy on the Street, who carry out their activities on these dates through the control of authorized persons.
“Thanks to President Nicolás Maduro and Mayor Carmen Meléndez, we have been able to help each other because we can work from 7:30 in the morning to 6:30 in the afternoon,” said Ochoa.
Meanwhile, Aron Santisoy, beneficiary of a permit to market religious items related to the celebration of Major Week, thanked President Nicolás Maduro and the mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez for this plan that regulates the incorporation of a Popular Street Economy in an organized manner and with greater awareness of the use of spaces in the city.
“This time, the permissions have been more formalized and you can tell that we are more organized like this, which is in the best interest of vendors, Catholic faithful and the authorities,” he said.
Route and inspection
Regarding the operations to verify the management of the respective permits for street vendors, Reny Paruta, head of the Popular Economy coordination on the Street of the Urban Control Directorate of the Mayor's Office of Caracas, confirmed the attention to all those who attended to request permits to work itinerantly in public spaces, during the Easter 2024 season.
“We have been deployed primarily to ensure that street merchants during Easter 2024, as instructed by Chief Admiral Carmen Meléndez, mayor of the Bolivarian Libertador Municipality, aimed at ensuring that public spaces are not used in an anarchical, disorganized way that prevents the faithful from traveling,” he said.
Officials of the Urban Control Commission verified on the streets that sellers of the Popular Economy have the precautions established in the decree of the Caracas Municipal Council to be able to carry out this office in the center of the city.
This plan has succeeded in eliminating criticism from owners and representatives of formal commercial premises, after being authorized by the mayor's office to carry out their economic activity in downtown Caracas.
The Urban Control Directorate of the Mayor's Office of Caracas reported the change in mandatory stop days for popular street vendors, now on Mondays and not Wednesdays, as the measure has been implemented until now.
