This Monday, the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, renewed for 30 days the declaration of a “state of emergency” in four provinces and canton (municipality), due to “serious internal shock”, in the face of an overflow of violent acts.
In this way, the Armed Forces and the National Police are empowered to carry out searches, operations and inspections, the Xianhua news agency said.
The Ecuadorian president pointed out in the decree that the joint action of law enforcement agencies has allowed organized armed groups to continue to lose their territorial control in certain areas of the country and weaken their structures.
Noboa made the decision through Executive Decree 175 issued by the Presidency, in which he stated that it is necessary to resort to “extraordinary and temporary measures” to combat organized crime, which is attributed to the current security crisis affecting the country.
The State of Emergency has governed the country since last August and covers the coastal provinces of Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Manabí, as well as the Echeandía canton (municipality), in the province of Bolívar (center).
“The ultimate objective of the state of emergency is to guarantee public order, social peace and the peaceful coexistence of citizens,” the president said in the decree.
