In the context of the national strike that began with the withdrawal of the diesel subsidy, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) called for a mobilization in Quito on the occasion of the Day of Interculturality and Plurinationality, which was repressed by the police.

Through its social networks, CONAIE indicated that “the mobilization was taking place peacefully, within the framework of October 12, when police forces launched tear gas and violently dispersed the demonstrators, including women, young people and the elderly.” They also shared videos from the time of the dispersion.

From the early hours, the military surrounded the concentration points of those mobilized and closed roads to enter Quito with land. The military alleged that Presidential Decree 174 was in force, through which the Government ordered a new state of emergency for the provinces of Pichincha, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Bolívar, Cañar, Azuay, Orellana, Sucumbíos and Pastaza, for the cause of serious internal commotion.

The president of CONAIE, Marlon Vargas, also accused that the police acted “with violence from the beginning, immediately repressing even children and entire families,” Sputnik Mundo quoted on its website.
