This Sunday, President of Egypt, Abdelfatah Al-Sisi, made an urgent call to the United States (USA) and the international community to intervene in the protracted controversy with Ethiopia regarding the use of the waters of the Nile River.
Through a message released by The Middle East, the Egyptian president formalized his disposition before the United Nations (UN) and accepted the mediation proposal of his American counterpart, Donald Trump, with the objective of resolving a conflict that affects the stability of the region.
The dispute, which has historical roots of more than a century, intensified in 2011 after the construction of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) began. Egypt and Sudan, nations that critically depend on the flow of the Nile for their livelihood and water security, have expressed concern about the control that this infrastructure gives to Ethiopia.
In his statements, Al-Sisi questioned the management of the Ethiopian administration, pointing out that the lack of technical agreements prevents ensuring the necessary flow of water during critical periods of drought or floods.
Despite the tensions, the Egyptian head of state reaffirmed that diplomatic channels remain his government's priority to protect the interests of all the countries in the basin. “Dialogue is the best path; cooperation and creativity are the way to satisfy the interests of all the nations involved,” Al-Sisi emphasized.
With this movement, Cairo seeks to establish a binding legal framework that regulates the filling and operation of the dam, ensuring the economic and social survival of the peoples who share the longest riverbed in Africa.
