This Tuesday, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced an investment of 200 million euros ($233 million) for the promotion of “innovative nuclear technologies”, after evidencing the dependence on oil supply in the midst of the conflict in the Middle East.

“It was a strategic mistake for Europe to turn its back on a reliable and affordable source of low-emission energy,” said Von der Leyen during a summit organized between France and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Emmanuel Macron, President of France, said that nuclear energy “is key to reconciling independence and competitiveness”, calling on the public and private sectors to invest in this field, which represents 10% of the electricity currently generated on the planet.

The objective of the summit, in which 40 countries including the United States and China participate, is “to identify the necessary practical measures that must be implemented, and to establish a concrete road map for 2050”.
