Last Wednesday, the director general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Qu Dongyu, recognized the “inexorable progress” of Latin America and the Caribbean in the fight against hunger.

In the agency's most recent figures, undernourishment affected 5.1% of the region in 2024, one point lower than the peak recorded in 2020, which means that 6.2 million people stopped going hungry in the region.

At the opening of the 39th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, in Brasilia, Qu recalled that Brazil, Costa Rica, Guyana and Uruguay have a prevalence of hunger of less than 2.5%, while Chile and Mexico are very close to this goal.

The director of the UN agency pointed out that there are still challenges, such as “high food prices, limited fiscal space and increased climate risks”, so he called for greater investment, promoting family farming and offering solutions to extreme weather events.
