The senior official of Indonesia's provincial disaster management and mitigation agency, Muharrindo Idwan, reported that the death toll from floods and landslides in the province of West Sumatra rose to 19, and seven other people are still missing.
“Most of the victims were found in the Pesisir Selatan regency. A total of 16 bodies were discovered there and seven others have not been found. The rest of the deceased were found in the Pariaman regency,” Idwan told the Xhinhua news agency through a telephone contact.
“The victims were not only swept away by strong currents, but they were also buried in the ground during landslides,” he added.
In addition, he added that strong currents collapsed and submerged 16 bridges, cut roads and swept away houses, making it difficult to distribute aid to those affected.
