French authorities today placed an electronic bracelet on former President Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012), sentenced to one year in prison for corruption and influence peddling.

On December 18, the 70-year-old politician received the ratification by the Court of Cassation, the highest jurisdiction in France, of the sentence handed down in 2021 on the so-called “subject of listening”.

Then, Sarkozy was sentenced to three years in prison, one of them with internment, but after an appeal, the court of last instance decided that he must wear the electronic bracelet during the year of punishment, with the other two already previously suspended.

The matter dates back to 2013, when, in the context of investigations into illegal funding of his 2007 presidential campaign, the judiciary ordered the continuation of Sarkozy's conversations, which revealed the existence of a secret line used to communicate about the issue with his lawyer Thierry Herzog.

Sarkozy can be absent from his home between 08:00 and 20:00, local time, a deadline extended on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to 21:30, due to the trial he has faced since January 6, accused of illegally funding his 2007 campaign with Libyan money.

Among the documents are the promise of 50 million euros in exchange for diplomatic, economic and judicial actions.
