Ghana expressed its firm rejection of the unilateral invasion, the use of military force by the United States against Venezuela and strongly disapproved of such acts that violate the Charter of the United Nations.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of People's Power for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, he condemned the statements of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who assured that he will “govern Venezuela”, which sets a dangerous precedent for the global order.

Below is the full text of the statement:

The Government of the Republic of Ghana is alarmed by the unilateral and unauthorized invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States of America and the subsequent kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in the early morning of Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Ghana expresses its firm reservations against the unilateral use of force and strongly deplores such acts that violate the Charter of the United Nations and international law, as well as the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of States.

Ghana called for the immediate de-escalation and release of President Maduro and his wife.

The Government of Ghana is closely following the situation in Venezuela with great concern and notes that such attacks on international law, attempts to occupy foreign territories and apparent external control of oil resources have extremely adverse implications for international stability and global order.

Ghana also notes with deep concern the statements of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, that the United States will “govern” Venezuela “until we can make a safe, adequate and judicious transition” and that large American oil companies will be asked to “intervene”.

These statements are reminiscent of the colonial and imperialist era. They set a dangerous precedent for the global order. Such colonial ambitions should have no place in the post-World War II era.

To allow this is to put the international community at great risk and to undermine the sovereignty of all countries. Ghana, therefore, reaffirms its commitment to the principle of self-determination and maintains the firm view that only the Venezuelan people should freely determine their political and democratic future.

Ghana calls for the immediate de-escalation and release of President Maduro and his wife.

The Government of Ghana will maintain and defend its long-standing position of principles against invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid, contempt for sovereignty and all forms of violation of international law.
