Government of Spain agrees to urgent decrees in the face of housing crisis

The Spanish Government approved a series of emergency decrees aimed at containing the severe crisis of access to housing affecting various regions of the country, prioritizing measures aimed at regulating rental prices and curbing real estate speculation.

The measures include strengthening regulations in so-called tense areas, expanding the public rental park and increasing social protection guarantees for families in situations of vulnerability or risk of eviction.

Quote from spokespersons for the Spanish Executive regarding the special plan: “We are applying a set of extraordinary tools to defend the right to a decent roof, curb abuse in rent costs and guarantee effective and immediate solutions to our citizens”.

The approval of the regulatory package seeks to mitigate the socio-economic impact generated by the rise in housing prices in the main cities of the European nation, also responding to the continuous mobilizations of social movements that demand to guarantee housing as a fundamental right.
