The governor of Táchira, Freddy Bernal, reported that on instructions from the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, a social and medical plan was activated to treat displaced persons who could reach Táchira through the García de Hevia municipality, as a result of the armed conflict in Colombia.
“The border security operation has been reinforced with combat units because it could happen that, in the midst of internal confrontation, some armed groups will try to enter Venezuela and disturb the peace that the Government has achieved with efficiency and with which the people of Tachira have become accustomed to living,” said the regional president.
As reported by the newspaper Úlmas Noticias, Bernal indicated that unfortunately violence in Colombia has always had an impact on Venezuela and for this reason, historically, for more than 40 years, more than six million displaced persons have been welcomed, providing them with health, security, food, housing and education in the country.
He clarified that so far no displaced person has arrived in Táchira, “the clashes continue, President Gustavo Petro declared a State of Shock in Norte de Santander and the important thing is that Colombia solves its internal problems and that we be vigilant to avoid affecting us,” he concluded.
