Dominican authorities warned this Monday, August 12, that the national territory will be affected by the impact of rains related to tropical storm Ernesto, which is strengthening in the Atlantic, the Telesur website reported.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warning about Ernesto explained that hurricane hunters in the Air Force are investigating the system, while although the phenomenon is still far from the Lesser Antilles, civil protection agencies in the Dominican Republic are keeping an eye on his trajectory.
“Tropical storm conditions and heavy rain are expected in parts of the Leeward Islands late tonight or early Tuesday,” the NHC said, while tropical storm warnings were issued for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
They also noted that the phenomenon continues to advance rapidly to the west, while meteorologist Fermín Estévez stressed that, “if we follow that trajectory for Tuesday night, we will be receiving rains, mainly to the northeast and southeast and that they will gradually increase towards Greater Santo Domingo and the center of the National District.”
According to the most recent report issued, the weather system was 700 kilometers east-southeast of Antigua and 1,175 kilometers east-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a travel of 43 kilometers per hour and maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour.
The reports include forecasts of waves of seven and nine feet from Punta Cana (La Altagracia province) to María Trinidad Sánchez province, with a cumulative amount of rain for four days of between 100 and 150 millimeters, mainly from Gran Santo Domingo, the eastern part of the national territory, such as La Altagracia, La Romana, El Seibo, Hato Mayor and others.
