The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stated that the island will maintain its historic relationship with Denmark if it has to choose between this country and the United States, and stressed that the territory has remained under Danish administration for decades through various legal frameworks.
Nielsen stated that the population rejects any attempt at external domination and called for the preservation of internal cohesion. “Greenland doesn't want to be owned by anyone. If we had to choose between the United States and Denmark, we would choose Denmark. It's time for unity,” he said in a public statement.
His words precede a meeting at the White House between representatives of both governments to discuss issues related to the island, after President Donald Trump stated that Greenland should be incorporated into the United States, even by force.
