At least 30,000 people are at risk due to the activity of the Fuego volcano, located between three departments in central Guatemala, warned the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED).
The executive secretary of CONRED, Claudinne Ogaldes, reported that nearby towns in the departments of Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla will be evacuated immediately, after the volcano showed effusive activity in the last few hours.
He explained that 282 families are
staying in the town of San Juan Alotenango, in Sacatepéquez,
while there is a shelter ready in Coatzumalguapa, Escuintla, according to an international press.
According to a Conred newsletter, the activity of the volcano of fire can cause “constant incandescence during the night and early morning, as well as lava flows that can descend through any ravine of the volcano (...) There can also be constant avalanches towards the different flanks of the volcano, which could cause pyroclastic flows causing more ash at low elevations .”
