The President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, assured through his account on the social network X that Venezuelan migration is caused by the economic blockade, which also had the help of the Colombian government (Iván Duque and Álvaro Uribe) and that it became a true “boomerang”.

In response to criticism from a representative of the Colombian right, Mateo Amaya, who ironized that: “The migration of Venezuelans to Colombia is 2.8 million, do you mean that climate change affects Venezuela more than Colombia? No, it just means that Petro does not accept that socialism is the real cause of this migration”; Petro explained that the Bolivarian nation was blocked from selling oil internationally, leading to impoverishment and, in turn, migration.

“It's time for a policy change. Colombia is interested in Venezuelan society living in peace, in deep democracy and returning to economic and social well-being. That is why the blockade must be lifted and there must be free elections,” he added.

He also assured that public universities will be opened for Colombian and Venezuelan youth living in Colombia. “I expect financial assistance from the U.S. government to sustain this program. This and not the battalions on the borders is the best method to contain the exodus,” he said.
