Tropical Storm Melissa, formed in the Caribbean Sea, is moving west with maximum sustained winds of more than 80 kilometers per hour and is expected to be near the southwestern part of Haiti and Jamaica this weekend, so they are on alert.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), in its latest bulletin, noted that “hurricane conditions are possible in the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, where Hurricane Watch is in effect.”

In the last few hours, Melissa was about 480 kilometers south of Port-au-Prince, according to the Telesur website.

In this regard, Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic have declared an alert to the imminent passage of the tropical storm, which is forecast to cause dangerous floods and landslides in the areas of incidence, so Cuba keeps a close eye on its evolution due to the forecast, since it reflects the Caribbean island close to the trajectory.

Melissa has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour and a central pressure of 1,003 hectopascals.

The trajectory of this tropical storm, which has a speed of 22 kilometers, has not been able to be precisely determined due to weather conditions in the Atlantic, so the movement will determine the intensity.

For its part, Cuba sees this phenomenon as a potential danger for the region and remains vigilant in the face of the possible trajectory it may take in the coming days.

It is expected that during Melissa's passage through the central area of the Caribbean Sea, it will also cause heavy rainfall in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, where, in turn, the meteorological phenomenon could find favorable conditions for its development.

Melissa is the thirteenth named storm to form in the Atlantic during 2025 as part of the cyclonic season that is expected to continue until November 30.
