Haiti is facing one of the most severe hunger crises in the world, due to the development of excessive violence by armed gangs, according to a new report by the Committee for Integrated Phase Classification of Food Security (CIF).

The evaluation, carried out by independent experts on food security and nutrition from the United Nations (UN), governments and non-governmental organizations as action against hunger, reveals that more than 5 million Haitians suffer from levels of hunger considered to be crisis or worse.

Almost 6 million people face conditions similar to famine (phase 5), while approximately 2 million are in an emergency situation (phase 4) and 30% of the population (around 3.4 million) is classified as having a food crisis (phase 3).

The report covers how violence and insecurity are exacerbating an already acute humanitarian crisis, Telesur said.
