Last Thursday, the head of HAMAS's political bureau, Khalil al-Hayya, announced that the movement is willing to enter into immediate and comprehensive negotiations to achieve a comprehensive exchange of prisoners, as well as a total cessation of hostilities, the military withdrawal of Israel from Gaza and the start of reconstruction efforts.
Al-Hayya stressed that any agreement must include the lifting of the prolonged blockade on the Gaza Strip.
In a recorded speech, al-Hayya said that HAMAS is prepared to release all captives under its control in an exchange for an agreed number of Palestinian prisoners currently being held in Israeli jails.
The Palestinian leader welcomed the recent comments of former US envoy Adam Boehler, who advocated addressing the issue of prisoners and the conflict as part of a comprehensive agreement. Al-Hayya described this position as aligned with the position of Hamas.
