The governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI, in English), Mohamad Reza Farzin, resigned in the face of the fall in the price of the national currency and high inflation, Iranian media reported on Monday.
“The head of the CBI resigned. It is likely that the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Masoud Pezeshkian) will accept it,” Sputnik quoted Nour News agency as saying.
Likewise, Iranian media indicate that Pezeshkian plans to replace Farzin with Abdolnaser Hemmati, who had headed the CBI under President Hassan Rohaní (2013-2021).
Previously, the FARS news agency detailed that in Tehran there were protests over the fall of the national currency, the Iranian rial. The main theme of the protests was exchange rate fluctuations and their impact on wholesale and retail prices.
Iran is going through a period of high inflation. According to the governor of the CBI, Mohamad Farzin, the annual inflation level reached 38.9 percent, and the rial is being impetuously devalued.
