The departments of Colón, Gracias a Dios, Islas de la Bahia, Atlántida, Yoro and Cortés remain on red alert, while Choluteca, Valle, Olancho and Santa Bárbara will respect the yellow alert and the rest of the territory will remain on green alert.
After almost 48 hours of damage due to persistent rains, moderate winds and thunderstorms associated with tropical storm Sara, the Honduran Government extended the red alert to the northern and northwestern departments on Saturday, November 16, and kept the rest of the country yellow and green, the Telesur website reported.
According to the Secretariat for National Risk and Contingency Management (COPECO), 55,709 people have so far been affected by the aforementioned weather event, which continues to move near the Honduran coast, almost stationary, to approach the coast of Belize this Sunday, according to forecasts, with less intensity.
The National Disaster Risk Management System (SINAGER) reported that as of the morning of this Saturday, the 16th, one deceased (drowned by submersion) and 47,427 people have been affected by the rains and floods of the rivers, which have forced 2,078 people to be transferred to shelters, and are keeping 143 communities incommunicado. Damage has been reported to 141 homes and 778 affected families.
In a statement, the Honduran Red Cross warned that accumulated rainfall could exceed 300 mm this Saturday, increasing the flow of rivers and streams and causing floods.
Based on this certainty, the authorities insisted on the immediate evacuation of communities near rivers and streams.
