The National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents Autonomous Institute (IDENNA) expressed solidarity with the families of minors who lost their lives in a challenge promoted by social networks.

“We call on parents and representatives to remain aware of what their daughters and sons are following on social networks and to maintain ongoing guidance and supervision of online activities,” says part of the statement.

In this regard, IDENNA emphasized that social networks promote actions that are dangerous to the health and lives of children and adolescents.

In this regard, it called on the actors of the National System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents, especially municipal councils, protection councils and ombudsmen for children and adolescents, and community councils, among others, to carry out orientation campaigns on social networks in schools in the country.

Below is the full statement:

The National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents, the Autonomous Institute for the Rights of Children and Adolescents, joins the grief that grieves Venezuelan families who lost their children as a result of so-called challenges or challenges on the internet, which promote actions that are dangerous to the health and lives of the participants.

As stated at the Annual Full-Day Meeting on Child Rights: Children's Rights and the Digital Environment, at the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council: “Technology companies have an obligation to incorporate respect for children's rights into the design and application of digital tools and platforms, and they must provide adequate safeguards and much more sophisticated guarantees for their protection.” Digital platforms have a duty to ensure safe, ethical and responsible digital environments.

We call on parents and representatives to remain aware of what their daughters and sons are following on social networks and to maintain ongoing guidance and supervision of online activities.

The daily exposure to social networks of children and adolescents without supervision develops harmful habits and naturalizes the consumption of messages that incite violence.

All actors of the National System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents, especially municipal councils, councils for the protection and defense of children and adolescents, and community councils and other forms of popular organization, are called upon to continue and maintain a permanent deployment in schools and communities, advising on the risks of this type of content and promoting discussions and initiatives for a responsible and supervised use of social networks.

It should be noted that the Organic Law for the Protection of Children and Adolescents provides for a measure of deprivation of liberty to anyone who improperly sells, supplies or delivers products whose components may cause physical or mental harm.
