Citizens of León and León in Spain protested against what they consider to be “imperialist interference” by the United States in Venezuela and that on Saturday ended with the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a military operation carried out on Venezuelan soil that cost the lives of civilian and military citizens.

Those called by Cospaz León and the NATO Coordinator braved the snow this Sunday and gathered in front of Botines to demand “No more blood for oil. The demonstrators, who included representatives of unions and left-wing parties, as well as individual citizens, called for “defending the right of the Venezuelan people like the rest of the peoples of the world to be able to freely choose their own politics and defend their own interests as a people.”

José Reguera, head of the local committee of the COSPAZ solidarity and peace committees in León. “We defend the same thing as in recent years with the Palestinian people or with the war situation in Ukraine: the right of peoples to freely choose their path and destiny,” he said.

“We are here to defend the Venezuelan people who are currently suffering an attack by the United States, imperialist interference by the United States, within all the geopolitical movements currently being carried out by the Trump administration and other American administrations before,” he added.

The NATO Coordinator calls for the “end of imperialism”

For his part, the spokesman for the NATO Coordinator in León called for the “end of American imperialism” and demanded that the Government of Spain withdraw from the transatlantic organization, while from CGT they stressed that “the bombings on Venezuelan territory and the capture of the president of Venezuela at the hands of the US army under the orders of Donald Trump, have violated international law and any UN regulations”.

CGT denounces “political and economic control” over the region

“After these attacks, several fatalities and injuries can already be counted, in what is undoubtedly a new attack by Yankee imperialism against people's freedom and life. This is not an anti-drug operation, let us not be fooled. This is an organized and premeditated attack to take control of a territory in which the world's largest oil reserve is located, which they want to be controlled by the world's great magnates. But it also means taking control of the entire Southern Cone of America. Political and above all economic control,” they added from CGT in a note to highlight “that the Maduro government is not an example of democracy, it is no excuse for the Trump government to use all kinds of methods to take over the destinies of an entire continent.”

A “plunder” for Podemos

For its part, Podemos León expressed in a statement its “deep rejection of the illegal military attack perpetrated by the United States against the Venezuelan people and territory.” “We know that Trump and his allies have zero concern for the Venezuelan people and that their goal is to plunder a country richer in resources such as oil and other minerals. Supranational entities (UN, EU) and our government cannot remain equidistant after these events and must condemn both the bombings carried out by the US military and the illegal kidnapping of the Venezuelan president and his wife,” the purple formation explained in a statement.
