Although it seems surreal, the CNN news network confirmed, in a publication on its website, the “damage” that social networks (RRSS) do by inciting violence through disinformation.
In the publication, the network highlights that false viral statements “may be the clearest and most direct example to date of the way in which uncontrolled disinformation on social networks can cause violence and harm in the real world”.
It also points out that “false statements that have been widely circulated, especially on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter”, generate violence for political reasons.
“It's a pattern that is repeated despite years of calls from governments and civil society groups for social media platforms to curb inflammatory and hateful posts, as well as the promises of companies themselves to do more. However, the recent withdrawal of content moderation by some of the major platforms suggests that the problem of violence fueled by disinformation may get worse before it gets better,” says CNN.
In addition, it specifies that there are advances in the regulation of social networks through legal channels in some countries, such as the European Union, with the new Digital Services Act, which seeks to hold social media companies responsible for the dissemination of erroneous information.
On the other hand, in the United Kingdom, the Online Security Act could come into force this year and, among other things, requires social media platforms to remove illegal content.
Although the publication is perfectly applicable to the Venezuelan case, the network bases it on recent events in the United Kingdom, where the influence of social networks has generated several waves of violence. However, he has never spoken out about the case of Venezuela, where digital platforms have served as a means to generate chaos and destabilize the country for purely political reasons and fuel coups d'etat.
CNN's response to the Venezuelan State's complaints has been to describe it as a dictatorial regime, and not as a victim of the negative effect of social networks; in fact, recently the Government of President Nicolás Maduro has been subject to value judgments after the decision to suspend the use of platform X for ten days, so it is imperative to ask why social networks represent a danger for the United Kingdom and for Venezuela a means of expression.
