The Venezuelan Parliamentary Group of the Indigenous and Afro-descendant Parliament of America (PIA-GPV) promotes the creation of laws that strengthen ancestral territories and communal organization.

This was reported by the president of the PIA-GPV, Deputy Pedro Requena, during a strategic meeting held at the headquarters of the Socialist Legislative Council of the state of Monagas, according to a note from the National Assembly (AN). Requena explained that the central objective of this parliamentary agenda is the consolidation of national and international legal frameworks that protect the culture and land tenure of indigenous peoples.

During the day, direct proposals from the Chaima, Warao, Kariña and Eñepa indigenous communities were heard. In this way, Requena said, the commitment to legislate from the ground up is fulfilled.

Self-Government and Resistance

On the other hand, the parliamentarian emphasized that communal organization is the main tool of resistance. Under this premise, he confirmed that indigenous self-government is sought to promote social welfare in coordination with the National Executive.

“We are showing that the word is fulfilled. Our identity guides the consolidation of the Communal State with laws that are born of the people,” said Requena.

Institutional participation

The president of the Permanent Committee on Indigenous Peoples of the Parliament, deputy Kariela Aray, and the president of the Socialist Legislative Council of the state of Monagas, Sandra Montes, participated in this meeting. Representatives of the Ministry of Popular Power for Indigenous Peoples, legislators and youth leaders also attended.
