The Government of Brazil, which holds the rotating presidency of the BRICS for this year, announced on Monday the accession of Indonesia as a new full member of the economic bloc, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the South American giant.

The inclusion of the fourth most populated nation in the world was unanimously supported at the Johannesburg Summit, in the context of the process of expanding the full membership of the group.

“In view of the 2024 presidential elections, Indonesia formally informed the group of its interest in joining the BRICS only after the formation of a new Government. By consensus, the BRICS countries approved the entry of Indonesia into the group, in line with the guiding principles, criteria and procedures for expanding membership agreed in Johannesburg,” the text states.

The BRICS group, initially comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran on January 1, 2024. Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are member states of the group.
