The life of the former vice-president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, is in danger, as reported by the International Committee for his Liberation, which asked the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to extend the precautionary measures in his favor.

Through the social network X, the Committee reported: “We alert the Commission and the international community that the life of former vice-president Jorge Glas is in danger. It is the duty of the government chaired by Daniel Noboa to guarantee the life and physical integrity of Jorge Glas.”

The letter sent to the human rights body expresses concern for the physical integrity and health of Glas, who was allegedly subjected to torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

He has also asked this body to extend the precautionary measures for Glas, who has been held in a maximum-security prison in southwestern Ecuador since April of last year.

The argument of the requesting instance responds to the “systematic non-compliance of the Ecuadorian State with its obligations under international law”.

Since December 2024, personalities from 15 countries have asked the regional body to adopt new measures to protect the life of Glas, who has mental and physical health problems, while waiting for judicial proceedings for alleged embezzlement.
