The Islamic Republic of Iran will respond with attacks against United States (US) bases in the Persian Gulf region in the event of an aggression, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al Jazeera television channel.

“We have no capacity to attack U.S. territory. If Washington attacks us, we will launch attacks against their bases in the region,” Araghchi said.

Likewise, the Iranian diplomatic leader stressed that these actions will not constitute an attack against neighboring countries, since the Americans are in those bases.

Representatives of the United States and Iran held on Friday in Muscat, the capital of Oman, the first negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program since the outbreak of the regional conflict last June.

During the months of April and May 2025, the United States and Iran held five rounds of indirect consultations with the mediation of Oman in Muscat and Rome.

The dialogue resumed after US President Donald Trump sent a letter to the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, in early March 2025, in which he raised the possibility of a new nuclear agreement, as well as the threat of a military response if diplomatic negotiations failed.

However, on June 13, Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran on the pretext that that country was about to acquire a nuclear weapon, although the Iranians had always denied the military dimension of their nuclear program.
