At least seven Palestinians lost their lives in an Israeli military aircraft attack on a school building located west of Gaza City, the Palestinian agency WAFA reported.

The attack hit the Kafr Qasem school, in the beach camp, around 11:00am (local time), according to authorities. Among the dead was Majed Saleh, director of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

Israel stated that the attack was aimed at Hamas fighters there and that it had used air surveillance and taken other measures to limit the risk to civilians, Reuters details.

Hamas, the militant Islamist group that rules Gaza, has regularly denied Israeli accusations that it uses hospitals and other civilian buildings for military purposes in the nearly year-long war.

Among the people killed are at least thirteen minors and six women, including one who is three months pregnant. There are also nine minors among the injured, some with amputated limbs, according to the Palestinian daily Filastin.
