The Japanese Meteorological Agency activated a tsunami alert following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake recorded in Aomori prefecture at 23:15 local time.

According to Japanese media reports, the earthquake's epicenter was 50 kilometers deep. The alerts affect the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido, north of Tohoku, the east and west coasts of Hokkaido, as well as the coast of the Sea of Japan in Aomori. Also included are the prefectures of Miyagi and Fukushima, the latter marked by the previous earthquake of 2011 that affected its nuclear power plant.
