This Monday, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 shook the northeastern coast of Japan, leading to the immediate activation of emergency protocols and tsunami alerts in various regions of the coast.
The earthquake had its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers in front of the Sanriku area, according to the technical report issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Specialists warned of the imminent risk of waves that could reach three meters high in the coastal strip between Hokkaido and Fukushima.
Initial assessments indicate that the port of Kuji has been hit by waves approximately 80 centimeters high, although the authorities confirmed that, so far, there have been no fatalities or major structural damage.
However, the Japanese Government is constantly monitoring the situation to identify possible impacts in areas that are difficult to access or critical infrastructure.
The Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, heads a crisis cabinet to coordinate rescue and damage assessment efforts in the provinces most exposed to the natural phenomenon.
As a priority security measure, the national authorities urged the population living in low-lying areas to evacuate to high ground immediately, stressing the importance of following civil protection protocols to mitigate any risk derived from aftershocks or the advance of the sea.
Regarding the country's energy infrastructure, nuclear operators reported that no anomalies or leaks of radioactive material have been detected in plants located in the affected region.
Despite the stability of the reactors, the company TEPCO proceeded with the preventive removal of its workers at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini power plants to safeguard the integrity of the personnel while alert conditions persist in the area.
