José Jerí, a 39-year-old lawyer, was sworn in as Peru's interim head of state after the dismissal of Dina Boluarte. His term of office, limited to less than nine months, is part of the system of constitutional succession that gives the head of the Legislative Branch the responsibility of assuming the Executive Power in exceptional circumstances.

During the inauguration ceremony, Jerí indicated that his administration will be focused on national understanding and a broad dialogue, in the midst of what he described as a period of institutional instability, constant changes of power and social exhaustion.

In his first speech, he announced urgent measures to combat insecurity, identifying criminal networks as adversaries. He indicated that the strategy includes the deployment of the National Police and the support of the Armed Forces, as well as coordination with state agencies to combat organized crime.

Addressing Generation Z demonstrators, Jerí recognized their demonstrations as legitimate expressions of discontent. His inauguration was postponed at the request of parliamentarian José Quito, who proposed to replace the governing council chaired by Jerí, with the objective of forming a new body representing the governing parties.

The proposal was rejected by the conservative bloc that had supported the election of Jerí as president of the Congress, allowing him to take office.

At the same time, Boluarte issued a statement expressing its disagreement with his dismissal, arguing that established procedures were not followed.

Jerí's political career has been the subject of legal challenges. In 2025, he was charged with alleged sexual assault in a case involving a young woman who identified him as the aggressor after losing consciousness at a social event. Although the Public Prosecutor's Office shelved the investigation due to lack of direct evidence. Jerí was also accused of violating a court order requiring him to undergo psychological treatment, earning him a charge of contempt. He is also being investigated for unjustified increases in his assets between 2021 and 2024, related to his participation in the Congressional Budget Committee, where he is being investigated for possible illicit enrichment.
