Before the national caucus meeting scheduled for this Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as head of the Liberal Party of Canada, a position he held for nine years.
Trudeau's resignation leaves the party without a permanent leader, while polls give the conservative opposition the winner in the October elections, Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail reported over the weekend.
Trudeau, who will remain prime minister until a new liberal leader is elected, assumed responsibility in the party in 2013 with the promise of protecting women's rights and combating climate change, and now the challenge for the political organization is to choose someone strong to face Donald Trump's second presidency in the United States and his tariff policy.
