On June 29, 1589, Diego de Osorio y Villegas founded La Guaira, a state located in the center-north of the country, 30 kilometers from Caracas, formerly known as Huaira by indigenous peoples.

The Aboriginal Araucos were the first to populate these lands. But they were displaced in some places by the Caribbean before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.

It stands out for having one of the most important colonial centers in the country, with structures such as the Ermita del Carmen, the Puente de Jesús, the Casa Guipuzkoana, the Casa Boggio, the Birthplace of José María España, the headquarters of the country's First Printing House on Bolívar Street, among other structures of the then thriving society.

In this state, important heroes of Venezuelan Independence were born, including José María España and Manuel Gual; two Presidents of the Republic such as General Carlos Soublette and Doctor José María Vargas. In addition, the Venezuelan-Curazolean hero, Manuel Pira, spent much of his life in La Guaira.
