Magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook Japan

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook the Kumamoto area, in Japan, on Tuesday, where at least 50 people were injured and a tsunami warning was triggered in several coastal areas.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the earthquake occurred at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT), and that its epicenter was located about 10 kilometers deep under Kumamoto prefecture, located on the Japanese island of Kyushu.

The Minami district hospital, in the city of Kumamoto, received more than 50 people injured after the earthquake, VTV reports.

At least one of them remains unconscious. The damage and the number of victims are still being evaluated, the Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, said from Tokyo.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that more than 150,000 people were instructed to move to evacuation centers.
