On May 17, 2009, the literary world received the tragic news of the physical departure of the poet of love and exile, and prolific Uruguayan writer, Mario Benedetti, novelist, playwright, storyteller and critic, one of the great names in Spanish-American literature.

Beyond the popularity that he had forged himself, the Uruguayan cultivated a discretion that he exercised in his ways and was also translated into his poems, in which he made simplicity an aesthetic.

His extensive work covered narrative, dramatic and poetic genres; his work is as prolific as it is popular; his novels such as The Truce (1960) or Thanks for Fire (1965) were adapted for the big screen.

Considered a chronicler of his time, his writings are charged with a strong political commitment, in order to explain the situation to his 'close neighbors'. Tenderness and nostalgia, rebellion and restlessness, the Uruguayan pen evolved throughout his life, always with the objective of creating images that envelop and capture the reader's attention.
