On April 20, 1993, Mexican icon Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes (Mario Moreno), better known as Cantinflas, died , who worked as an actor and comedian, and won the Golden Globe in 1956.
Born on August 12, 1911 in Mexico City, Mario Moreno was a comedian who excelled in tents, itinerant variety theaters, theater and cinema. He enjoyed great popularity with the portrayal of his character Cantinflas, a man from poor neighborhoods. The character was associated with part of the Mexican national identity, especially in the lower classes, and allowed Moreno to establish a long and successful film career that included a Golden Globe for his debut in Around the World in 80 Days (1956).
The sixth of fourteen children, he worked as a shoe cleaner and worked various jobs to provide for his home. He participated in his country's politics conservatively, and his reputation as a spokesperson for the unprotected provided him with authenticity, making him an important figure in the fight against Trade Union Charrism (the practice of governing a single party to manage and control unions). He was president of the National Association of Actors (Anda) and the first general secretary of the Union of Film Production Workers (STPC).
In 1940, he founded the production company Posa Films together with Jacques Gelman and Santiago Riachi, and created the Actor's House for charity. After retiring, Moreno dedicated his life to helping others through charity and charitable organizations, establishing himself as one of the greatest Latin American artists of all time.
