The MEP Irene Montero denounced that the real objective of the military deployment ordered by Donald Trump in the Caribbean is not the fight against drug trafficking, but the interest in appropriating Venezuelan oil and the wealth of Colombia and Mexico.
Montero also questioned the fact that Trump announced the pardon of the former president of Honduras sentenced to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking, which, according to her, shows that his agenda is not aimed at fighting organized crime, but rather at controlling the region's strategic resources.
“It is unacceptable that the United States is threatening an invasion of Venezuela. Big drug traffickers don't go on boats across the Caribbean, but they go to the same Trump parties.”
Montero stressed that those responsible for drug trafficking do not travel on ships through the Caribbean, but rather frequent the same social circles as the President of the United States. He recalled that, while Trump threatens bombings and military operations against Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico under the pretext of drug trafficking, he pardons a former president convicted of that crime.
The MEP stressed that American pharmaceutical companies are responsible for the fentanyl crisis in the United States and that the United Nations (UN) has documented the participation of companies from that country in the laundering of money from drug trafficking.
Montero concluded that the real reason for the military alignment is the control of Venezuelan oil, the wealth of Colombia and Mexico, and the subordination of the Caribbean and Cuba as Washington's backyard. He stressed that the European Union has a legal obligation to reject these violations of international law and warned that “Trump is the greatest danger to humanity and Europe cannot continue to be a friend, accomplice or partner of this criminal, because our support makes us complicit in his crimes”.
