This Friday, the Government of Mexico broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador, following the illegal invasion of the Ecuadorian police at the Mexican Embassy in Quito to forcibly take the former vice-president, Jorge Glas, who was a refugee in the diplomatic compound and had been granted political asylum on the afternoon of April 5.

“This is a flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico, which is why I have instructed our foreign minister, Alicia Bárcena, to issue a statement on this authoritarian act, to proceed legally and immediately declare the suspension of diplomatic relations with the government of Ecuador,” ordered the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador in a message he published through the social network X.

In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement stating:

“Mexico strongly condemns the acts of violence against the head of the mission's Foreign Ministry, Roberto Canseco Martínez, as well as the arbitrary arrest of former vice-president Jorge Glas Espinel, who was in the embassy and is undergoing political asylum because of the persecution he is experiencing,” said part of the statement.

In addition, the Mexican government will go to the International Court of Justice (CIP) to denounce violations of international law by the Government of Daniel Noboa in Ecuador.
